Standing Water in Your Crawl Space? A Sump Pump Solves It for Good
You went down to check your crawl space and found water sitting there. Maybe it's just in one corner, or maybe it covers a bigger area. Either way, you're worried. Is this going to damage your house? How did it get there? And how do you get rid of it?
Here in Central Illinois, crawl space water problems are common. Our clay soil doesn't drain well. We get heavy spring rains and snowmelt. Some areas of Mahomet have high water tables. All of that means water finds its way into crawl spaces.
Standing water damages your floor structure, creates mold, and affects your home's air quality. I've seen homeowners try to deal with it using a shop vac or just ignoring it and hoping it goes away. Neither works.
A sump pump actually solves the problem. It removes water automatically and keeps your crawl space dry, even during our wettest seasons.

How a Sump Pump Keeps Your Crawl Space Dry—Even During Heavy Rain
A sump pump is pretty straightforward. It collects water and pumps it away from your foundation before it can cause damage.
Here's how it works: Water flows to the lowest point in your crawl space, which is where we install the sump basin. When water fills the basin to a certain level, the pump kicks on automatically. It pumps that water out through a discharge line that runs away from your house—usually 10 to 15 feet away from your foundation.
Most pumps run on electricity. We also offer battery backup systems, which I highly recommend. That way, if your power goes out during a storm—which is when you need the pump most—it keeps running.
Sump pumps aren't just for basements. Crawl spaces need them too, especially here in Central Illinois where we deal with heavy spring rains and high groundwater levels. A good sump pump keeps standing water from ever becoming a problem.
What Happens When Water Sits in Your Crawl Space
Floor Rots
Creates Mold
Attracts Pests
Ruins Encapsulation
Standing water means constant moisture. Moisture rots wood. Your floor joists, beams, and subfloor start breaking down. You'll notice soft spots when you walk across your floors, or sagging in certain areas.
Eventually, you're looking at expensive structural repairs—I've seen floor framing fixes cost $15,000 or more because water damage went unchecked.
It Rots Your Floor Structure

Moisture is all mold needs to grow. And remember, about 50% of the air you breathe in your home comes up from your crawl space. If you've got mold growing down there, you're breathing it upstairs. It affects your family's health—allergies, respiratory issues, all of it.
It Creates Mold and Air Quality Problems

Rodents and insects are drawn to water sources. Standing water in your crawl space creates a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Termites thrive in moisture-damaged wood. You're basically inviting pests to move in.
It Attracts Pests

If your crawl space is already encapsulated, standing water defeats the whole purpose. The water has to go somewhere. A sump pump is the answer—we often install them as part of encapsulation projects.
Our clay soil doesn't drain well. Spring rains and snowmelt create seasonal water issues. Certain areas of Mahomet have high water tables. I've installed dozens of sump pumps in crawl spaces around here—I know exactly where water problems happen and why.

How We Install Crawl Space Sump Pumps That Actually Work
Assessment and Planning
First, I inspect your crawl space to find the lowest point where water naturally collects. That's where the sump basin goes. I also check for drainage issues outside that might be directing water toward your foundation. Then we figure out the best spot for the discharge line—where can we send this water so it drains away from your house properly?
We don't just drop a pump in and call it done. We figure out why you have water in the first place and where it needs to go.
Dig the Sump Basin
We excavate a pit at the lowest point, typically about 24 inches deep. Then we install the basin or liner and create a proper gravel base around it for drainage. This is where water will collect before the pump sends it out.
Install the Pump
We install a quality sump pump—not a cheap one from a box store that'll quit in two years. We set up the float switch so it activates automatically when water rises. We install a check valve to prevent water from flowing back down into the basin after the pump shuts off.
We also strongly recommend battery backup systems. If your power goes out during a storm—exactly when you need the pump most—the battery backup keeps it running.
Discharge Line Setup
We run the discharge line at least 10 to 15 feet away from your foundation. Depending on your yard, we might bury it or route it along the surface. We make sure it won't freeze in winter and that water drains away properly—not back toward your house.
Test and Verify
Before we leave, we test the pump to make sure it's working right. We verify the water's draining where it should. We check all the connections. Then I show you how it works and what to listen for so you know it's doing its job.
From Assessment to a Dry Crawl Space
When You Call
Tell us what you're seeing—standing water, how much, how often it shows up. We'll schedule an assessment visit, usually within a day or two.
The Assessment Visit
I'll inspect your crawl space and the water issue. We'll identify where it's coming from and figure out
drainage patterns. I'll explain what you need and give you pricing the same day. No waiting around for a quote.
The Installation
Most sump pump installs take one day. We protect your home during the work—shoe covers, floor protection, the whole deal. We complete the installation, test everything, and show you how it all works. Then we clean up completely.
After Installation
I'll give you maintenance recommendations and explain what to listen for. Your pump should run during and after rain—that's a good thing. It means it's working. Check the basin once or twice a year to make sure it's clear. And if you ever have questions or concerns, call us. Chris or I will answer.

We Solve the Root Problem
We don't just install a pump and leave. We figure out why you have water in the first place. If your gutters are dumping water next to your foundation, we'll tell you. If your yard grading is directing water toward your house, we'll point it out.
We Use Quality Equipment
We don't use cheap pumps that'll fail in two years. We install reliable brands that last—the kind we'd put in our own homes. And we strongly recommend battery backup systems for peace of mind during storms and power outages.
We Do the Job Right
Proper basin installation. Correct discharge routing that actually drains water away. No shortcuts. I've fixed too many bad sump pump installs from other companies who did it quick instead of doing it right.

Water Issues We See (and Fix) in Central Illinois
Seasonal standing water from spring rains and snowmelt. High water table in certain Mahomet areas. Poor lot grading that directs water straight toward your foundation. Downspouts dumping water right next to your house. Clay soil that holds moisture instead of draining it away.
Hydrostatic pressure pushing water up through your foundation floor. HVAC condensate lines draining into the crawl space instead of outside. Plumbing leaks that have been going on for who knows how long.
These are the patterns I see over and over in our area. A sump pump handles the water that gets in. We also fix what's causing it when we can.
Stop Dealing with Crawl Space Water
Standing water won't fix itself. It gets worse. It damages your home's structure, creates mold and health problems, and hurts your home's value.
A sump pump solves it permanently. It runs automatically, keeps your crawl space dry, and protects your biggest investment.
Give us a call and Chris or I will answer personally. We'll come assess your situation—same day if you need it.
No pressure, no runaround, just honest answers about what you need. Let's keep your crawl space dry for good. You shouldn't have to worry every time it rains.
