The Crawl Space Shortcut a Lot of Homeowners Don't Know About

Jeff Robinson • October 6, 2026

When a homeowner finally makes the call, something shifts.

We come out and do a thorough inspection. We get under the home and look at everything — and we show you what we're seeing in real time so there are no surprises when we sit back down with you. You'll know exactly what's down there. You'll know exactly what it takes to fix it. And you'll have a clear picture of what your home looks like after the work is done.

No pressure. No scare tactics. Just an honest look at what's happening and a straightforward plan to address it.

Most homeowners tell us the same thing after that first visit.

They wish they hadn't waited as long as they did.

Why a Vapor Barrier Isn't the Whole Story

A lot of homeowners get a quote, see "vapor barrier," and think the job is done right. It's not always that simple.

Here's a question Jeff gets a lot: why can't you just put plastic on the floor and call it good?

The honest answer? You can. But that's not the same thing as real encapsulation. And the difference matters more than most people realize.

What a Vapor Barrier Actually Does

A vapor barrier on the floor blocks moisture coming up from the ground. That's a real benefit. It's just not the whole job.

Think of it like putting a lid on half a pot. It helps. But heat still escapes everywhere else.

A crawl space works the same way. Moisture and air don't just come from the ground. They come in through the walls too. If the walls are left uncovered, the space is still exposed.

What Full Encapsulation Actually Includes

Real encapsulation means covering the whole crawl space, not just the floor. Here's what that looks like:

  • Floor coverage. This is the part most people already know about.
  • Wall coverage. The barrier runs all the way up the walls, not just across the ground.
  • Mechanical fastening. The wall barrier gets locked in place so it stays put over time.
  • Sealed seams. Every seam gets taped tight with butyl tape, so there are no gaps for air or moisture to sneak through.
  • Spray foam insulation. This is the final layer. It locks everything in and creates a space that stays controlled, not just "covered."

Skip any one of these steps, and the space isn't fully sealed. It's just partly protected.

Why This Shortcut Happens

This isn't always someone trying to cut corners on purpose. A lot of the time, homeowners simply don't know there's a difference between "a vapor barrier" and "full encapsulation." The two terms get used like they mean the same thing. They don't.

That's an easy gap for a contractor to leave unexplained, especially if a full job costs more upfront than a partial one.

What the Right Job Looks Like When It's Done

When a crawl space is fully encapsulated, the difference is obvious. Clean. Bright. Dry. No musty smell. No damp, sagging feeling in the air.

One space Jeff worked on recently was for an entire apartment complex. Every resident in that building is now breathing cleaner air and living above a crawl space that's actually controlled, not just patched. That's the real payoff of doing the whole job instead of half of it.

We were out in Decatur recently doing a routine crawl space inspection when we spotted something on the wood joists that needed a closer look.

Most crawl space companies show up, do the work, and leave. You never really know what happened down there. You just hope it was done right.

I'm heading up to Rantoul today to check in on a job. Full crawl space encapsulation—two-inch high-density foam on the walls, vapor barrier, a couple of floor jacks under a sagging washer/dryer and furnace area.
