Got a Crack in Your Wall? Here's the First Thing to Check

Jeff Robinson • September 28, 2026

When a homeowner finally makes the call, something shifts.

We come out and do a thorough inspection. We get under the home and look at everything — and we show you what we're seeing in real time so there are no surprises when we sit back down with you. You'll know exactly what's down there. You'll know exactly what it takes to fix it. And you'll have a clear picture of what your home looks like after the work is done.

No pressure. No scare tactics. Just an honest look at what's happening and a straightforward plan to address it.

Most homeowners tell us the same thing after that first visit.

They wish they hadn't waited as long as they did.

Before You Worry About That Wall Crack, Check This First

Have you ever noticed a small crack in the corner of a wall in your house? Maybe you walked past it a dozen times before it really caught your eye. Once you see it, it's hard to stop thinking about it.

Is it serious? Is it just the house settling? Do you need to call someone right away?

Before you jump to any of those answers, there's one simple thing you can check first. And it's not even inside your house.

Start With Your Gutters

It might sound strange, but a crack inside your home can start with something happening outside — your gutters.

Here's how it works. Rain falls on your roof. Your gutters catch that water and carry it away. But if a gutter is draining in the wrong spot, it can dump all that water right at the base of your crawl space.

That's a problem. Water sitting at the base of your house doesn't just disappear. It can work its way down the footer. It can even get through the block. Once that happens, it starts causing damage you can't see — until one day, it shows up as a crack inside your wall.

The Check Only Takes a Few Minutes

The good news is, this is something you can check yourself, and it won't cost you a thing.

Go outside and look at your gutters. Follow them down and see where the water is actually draining. Is it flowing away from your house? Or is it landing right at the base, near your crawl space?

If it's draining in the wrong spot, that could be the real reason behind the crack you noticed inside.

Why This Matters More Than It Seems

It's easy to look at a small crack and think, "It's probably nothing." Or to feel a little panic and assume the worst. Neither reaction gets you closer to the answer.

The homeowners who avoid bigger, more expensive problems are usually the ones who take a few minutes to ask a simple question: what's causing this? They don't ignore it, and they don't panic either. They just check.

That's really all it takes. A five-minute walk around the outside of your house could be the difference between fixing something small now and dealing with something much bigger later.

We were out in Decatur recently doing a routine crawl space inspection when we spotted something on the wood joists that needed a closer look.
