We See What We Look At: A Lesson from a Hard Day
A Midday Walk with the Dogs
I'm out here in the middle of the day with the dogs, and honestly, today hasn't been great.
I take a couple walks a day with them. Sometimes I'm working through business problems. Sometimes I'm praying for friends or family. Sometimes I'm just trying to soak in what's around me and clear my head.
Today, I needed to focus on what I'm thankful for. Because when you're having a hard day, it's really easy to get caught up in everything that's going wrong. The job that didn't go as planned. The customer who's frustrated. The bills that need paying. All of it.
But here's what I'm learning: we see what we look at. And if all I'm looking at are problems, that's all I'm going to see.
So today's walk is about shifting my focus. Reminding myself what's actually going right, even when it doesn't feel like it.
The Truth About Hard Days in Business
Running a small business is hard. Some days, it feels like everything's going wrong at once.
Maybe a job took longer than expected and now you're behind schedule. Maybe a customer's unhappy even though you did everything right. Maybe you're trying to figure out how to pay for new equipment while also making payroll. Maybe you're just tired from doing this every single day.
And when you're a business owner in a small town like Mahomet, everybody sees you. At the grocery store. At your kids' games. Around town. There's nowhere to hide when you're having a rough day. Your reputation is always on the line.
Add parenting on top of that—trying to be present for your kids when your head's still stuck on work problems—and it can feel overwhelming.
The temptation is to just keep grinding. Push through. Work harder. Figure it out. But if you don't create space to step back and reset, you'll burn out. And when you're burned out, everything suffers. Your work. Your relationships. Your ability to show up well for anyone.
That's where these walks come in.
We See What We Look At
I heard this phrase a while back: "We see what we look at."
Sounds obvious, right? But think about it.
When all you focus on are the problems—the difficult jobs, the customers who complain no matter what you do, the equipment that breaks down, the bills piling up—that's all you're going to see. Your whole world becomes problems.
And it's not just that you notice problems more. It's that the problems start to feel bigger than they actually are. One bad customer interaction can ruin your whole day. One job that goes sideways can make you question whether you're even good at this.
When you're stuck in that negative focus, it affects everything. You make worse decisions because you're operating from a place of stress and frustration. You're shorter with people—customers, employees, your family. You miss opportunities because you're too caught up in what's going wrong to see what's going right.
I've been there plenty of times. Days where I can't see past the immediate problem in front of me.
But here's the thing: you can choose what you look at. It takes intention, especially on hard days. But when you deliberately shift your focus to what's actually good in your life, you start to see more of it.
It doesn't make the problems disappear. But it changes how you face them. And sometimes that's enough to keep moving forward.

What I'm Actually Thankful For
So today on this walk, I'm listing out what I'm grateful for.
I've got Joanna. She supports this business even when it's hard, even when I'm stressed and not the easiest person to live with. That's huge.
I've got four amazing kids. Healthy, good kids who are growing up way too fast.
I've got friends who actually care. People who check in, who support me, who I can call when I need to talk something through.
I've got Chris as a business partner. We've known each other since fourth grade. I trust him completely.
The business is growing. Some days it doesn't feel like it, but when I step back and look at where we were a year ago versus where we are now, we're actually doing pretty well.
I get to work in Mahomet, the town I grew up in. I get to help my neighbors. I get to do work that actually matters and makes a difference in people's homes.
When I list it all out like that, the list of what's going right is a lot longer than the list of what's going wrong today.
Why This Matters for How I Show Up
Here's why this isn't just about feeling better—it's about how I show up for people.
Your mental state affects everything. How you talk to customers. How you handle problems on a job. How you lead your team. How you make decisions.
When I'm overwhelmed and only focused on what's going wrong, I'm not my best self. I'm more reactive. Less patient. More likely to miss details or make decisions I'll regret later.
But when I take time to reset—even just a 20-minute walk with the dogs—I come back grounded. I can think more clearly. I treat people better. I do better work.
Stepping away isn't slacking off. It's part of doing good work.
Because the homeowners we serve in Mahomet and Central Illinois deserve the best version of me, not the burned-out, stressed-out version. They deserve a contractor who shows up with a clear head and genuine care for their home.
And I can't give that if I don't take care of myself first.
That's what these walks are really about.

The Walk as a Practice
I take two walks a day with the dogs. Not because I have extra time lying around—I don't. But because I need them.
Some walks are for problem-solving. Working through a tricky job or a business decision. Some are for praying—for friends, for family, for guidance on something I'm wrestling with. Some are just for observing what's around me and being present.
Today's walk was about gratitude. Pulling myself out of the negativity spiral and intentionally looking for what's good.
The dogs don't care what kind of walk it is. They're just happy to be out here. But they give me a reason to actually do it, even on days when I'd rather just keep grinding.
It's a simple practice. But it makes a real difference. Today started rough. But right now, on this walk? I'm doing alright.
If You're Struggling Today
If you're reading this and you're having a hard day—whether it's business stress, family stuff, or just life feeling overwhelming—I get it.
You don't have to have it all together. None of us do.
But I'd encourage you to do what I'm doing right now: look for what you've got to be thankful for. It doesn't have to be big things. Just real things.
It won't make your problems disappear. But it might change how you face them.
The good stuff is already there in your life. Your family. Your friends. The work you get to do. The community you're part of. You just have to look for it.
And sometimes that small shift in focus is exactly what you need to keep going.
